New Bond Street (C1690)
‘New Bond Street’ is based on one of the oldest surviving documents in English Heritage’s wallpaper archive, a fragment from an embossed leather wall hanging. In the era before wallpapers became commercially available, panels of embossed and painted leather were popular – though expensive – modes of decoration. The panels were sewn together to create large-scale hangings, repeated and displayed in the same way that drops of wallpaper are hung side-by-side to create a striking, modern (at the time!) interior.
