Every roll of wallpaper we create has been drawn from an historic pattern we have found. Some were originally hand-printed pieces, discovered as fragments behind layers of wallpapers in prestigious period homes. Other documents have been carefully preserved in archives at English Heritage or the Whitworth Art Gallery in Little Greene’s home in Manchester.

Founded in 1889 as the first English gallery in a park, the Whitworth has recently been transformed by a £15million development. Having been awarded the Art Fund’s ‘Museum of the Year 2015,’ the gallery has an extensive wallpaper archive featuring wallpapers dating back to the 17th century.

From January 29th to September 4th 2016, The Whitworth’s Wallpaper exhibition features highlights from their collection of 50’s and 60’s wallpapers including designs by Roger Nicholson and John Line.

The exhibition features the original documents of three Little Greene designs.

Most recently acquired by Little Greene for the ‘20th Century Papers’ collection, ‘Zingara’ is a design from a John Line collection produced in 1960. The colourway Cerulean Sea is completely faithful to the document found in the wallpaper archive at Manchester's Whitworth Art Gallery. The elegant freehand line quality of the original drawing serves additional charm to this relaxed scene of boats resting at anchor.

‘Florette’ is a striking, light-hearted design that embodies the 1950s, this paper was found in “The Architects Book of 100 Wallpapers” published in 1954. The original paper shows a selection of line-drawn dandelions, almost lost against an informal freehand trellis. The contemporary interpretation is a little easier on the eye, featuring the six subtly varied flower heads on a solid ground of colour.

‘Hampstead’ was inspired by the hand-printed ‘Apsley Collection’ by John Line & Sons, this relaxed interpretation of an urban Hampstead scene is attributed to designer Els Calvetti. All the line detail is retained and even the original colourways of grey and blue were accurately recreated by Little Greene for the 21st Century interior.

The latest Little Greene collection, ‘Archive Trails’ is an anthology of trailing wallpaper motifs that can be used in either a classic or contemporary setting.

Here we have compiled six ways to use ornithological and floral prints with coordinating paint colours for an effortless yet refined interiors scheme.

Sophisticated Framing

Rather than opting for a full feature wall, frame a large, bold print and combine with coordinating colours to achieve a contemporary, artistic look. The muted Gustav – Trophy combines perfectly with simplistic Grey Moss 234 framing and a neutral Linen Wash 33 backdrop.

Little Greene 2016 Archive Trails 07_LR Gustav - Trophy Frame: Grey Moss 234 Wall: Linen Wash 33 Trim and Fireplace: Loft White 222

Create Cosiness and Warmth

Create a sumptuous accent wall using Vine-Bleu and coordinate with trims painted in Lamp Black 228. Pairing a classic wallpaper design with a bold, deep colour immediately updates the room and exudes warmth.

Little Greene 2016 Archive Trails 09_LR Vine - Bleu Woodwork: Lamp Black 228 Cupboards: Portland Stone Deep 156

Pattern Contrast

Use two contrasting wallpaper colourways together to create harmony within a large space. Use a neutral colour on woodwork and doors to ensure that the wallpaper remains the focal point.

Little Greene 2016 Archive Trails 15_LR Paradise - Nightshade, Paradise - Aquamarine Woodwork: Loft White 222

Colour Highlights

Accessorise with a fresh highlight of colour using a bright shade like Mister David 47 to complement the vibrancy of the wallpaper design.

Simple Combinations

Utilise classic colour combinations such as gold and white for an effective contrast. The delicate shimmer of Sakura – Yellow Lustre is complemented by the simplicity of Loft White 222.

Below, you will find some frequently asked questions to help you select the best finish for your exterior paint project.

What is the best finish for exterior woodwork?

Little Greene offers both water-based and traditional finishes for all exterior joinery. Choose from our Intelligent Exterior Eggshell or Tom’s Oil Eggshell for a low sheen finish or Intelligent Gloss and Traditional Oil Gloss for a high gloss effect.

14 - Front Door - Celestial Blue Celestial Blue 101

How do I need to prepare exterior woodwork prior to painting?

  • Previously painted woodwork must be thoroughly cleaned and sanded to a firm edge, removing any loose or flaking paint. Any gaps and cracks must be cleaned, filled and sanded.
  • Bare wood must be primed using Traditional Oil Primer Undercoat before painting.
  • For knotty wood or resinous wood, our Aluminium Wood Primer should be applied. This will seal any resins within the wood. A coat of the Traditional Oil Primer Undercoat will then ensure the smooth application and perfect adhesion of the final coat – most likely to be one of our exterior gloss or eggshell finishes.

A Tip From Our Chemist: Little Greene Intelligent Exterior Eggshell is self-priming so no additional primer is required.

For the second year running, Little Greene has partnered with Regents University London to commemorate Marylebone Interiors Day, a celebration of Marylebone's interior design theme with a day of workshops, offers and consultations.

Little Greene collaborated with the university on the ‘Little Greene Award,’ inviting students to produce and present creative design ideas for the chance to win the award and have their work displayed in the Little Greene London showroom.

The ideas produced were judged by how closely they matched Little Greene’s brand identity, mirroring their originality and exploration of colour whilst maintaining the fundamental qualities of beauty, quality and accessibility.

The award was judged by Little Greene Showroom Manager, Robert Paul and Colour Consultant, Jenny Luck.

Interior Design student Anna Yumasheva received the award for her interior design scheme for an Urban Piano School.

She said: ‘I have done this project because I play piano myself and I graduated from my music school in Russia so I always wanted to do a project that would include music and especially piano because it is one of my passions as well as interior design. I was really happy that we could write our own brief, straight away I knew it was going to be a music school.’

The piano school design was Anna’s BA (Hons) Interior Design final year graduation project and was aimed at encouraging people from disadvantaged backgrounds to explore their potential through music.

The design was displayed in our showroom on the 21st of May to coincide with Marylebone Interiors Day.

Alongside the paints, we also showcased ‘Paradise – Pink,’ a limited edition pink colourway of our ‘Paradise’ wallpaper from the Little Greene ‘Archive Trails’ collection. ‘Paradise’ (c1940) celebrates a truly rich mix of styles. The English Heritage-owned document from which this paper is drawn is actually a 20th Century piece, but the subject – exotic flora and the familiar oriental ho-ho birds - is classic ancient Chinoiserie, whilst the colouration in the original is very much in the style of a 19th Century French paper.

Guests at the launch sampled colour-matched cocktails, ‘Carmine Cosmopolitan’ and ‘Dorchester Delight’ and viewed the new colours in the showroom which featured floral displays, pink balloons and a Little Greene mural. Little Greene will follow the success of its Grey and Blue collections with the Autumn 2016 launch of a delightful capsule collection of pink colours. ‘Pink’ comprises eight related pink shades, and provides a delicious choice from soft delicate tones associated with femininity and sensitivity to bolder, seductive hues. Designed to work harmoniously together and with other Little Greene shades, these versatile pinks include seven new colours and one from the existing colourcard.

The special palette celebrates our long-standing support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, held every October, during which 15p from every can of paint sold is donated to a Breast Cancer Charity. For 2016, Little Greene’s chosen charity will once again be Breast Cancer Haven, the only national breast cancer charity that provides one-to-one support to improve
the quality of life of anyone affected by breast cancer.

This limited edition colourcard will be available until next January, after which many of the shades will be incorporated into the updated Colours of England colourcard, due to be launched in Spring 2017. To accompany the new paint colours, We are also launching a new colourway of the Paradise (c1940) wallpaper design. Paradise celebrates a truly rich mix of styles. Re-coloured in a gentle pink, with a subtly shimmering mica ground, this limited edition colour way supports the Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign: it also reflects the growing trend for soft feminine colours in today’s interiors and is set to become a firm favourite in Little Greene’s extensive collection of wallpapers.

In keeping with Little Greene’s heritage links, ‘Pink’ has its roots in history. During the Renaissance period, Pink was used in paintings for the flesh colour of the human body, the ‘skin’ colour being created from a combination of two pigments – ‘Sinopia’, also known as Venetian Red, and Lime White. Whilst pink colours had been used in artists’ work for centuries it was
only during the 18th Century that pinks became popular in fashionable clothing and porcelain, with architecture following across Europe soon afterwards. The name ‘pink’ derived from the flower of the same name and was adopted in the late 17th Century (before this time the word was also applied to shades of yellow!).

Pink fell out of fashion in the 19th Century and only with the introduction of lightfast chemical dyes in the 20th Century creating bolder, brighter and more powerful pinks was there a resurgence in popularity. It was in the 1940s that pink truly became associated with girls; before that, pink had been for boys too. Often used to signify both femininity and sexual empowerment by and for women, pink demonstrates outer beauty and inner strength: nowadays, pink represents strength within women and, as such, is the colour many breast cancer charities have used to represent their brand.

Managing Director, David Mottershead, confirms: “Wide-ranging pink tones are now very much on-trend, and embraced by all in both fashion and interiors. The versatile hues on offer within Little Greene’s ‘Pink’ palette totally contradict the idea that pink is difficult to use, that it is sugary or overly feminine: these new and harmonious shades afford the ideal opportunity to invite the perfect pink into your home.”

Anlässlich des Brustkrebsmonats Oktober 2016 präsentiert Little Greene eine
Capsule-Collection in besonderen Rosatönen.

Paradise - Pink Paradise - Pink

Redecoration project at Leeds Castle

Last Spring 2015, Little Greene collaborated with Campbell Smith & Co. on the restoration and redecoration of the library & dining Room at Leeds Castle, the aim of the project was to restore the rooms to their former glory. Our job was to ensure that the colour palette chosen remained in keeping with the historic style and character of the building.

Dining Room Frames: Pearl Colour 167

Leeds Castle is a Tudor building and a fascinating piece of architecture, with records dating back to 1119. Catherine of Aragon is probably the most publicly recognised permanent resident of the castle.

Detailed research was carried out before the work commenced, enabling Campbell Smith & Co. to match the scheme to a precise specification using our Colours of England Card, featuring 62 authentic English Heritage shades. Combined with our colour expertise and specialist formulation, it made for a fantastic result.

Library Walls: White Lead Deep 171 Library Walls: White Lead Deep 171

In keeping with the original décor of the castle, a number of pedigree and heritage techniques were used to conserve the original features. Carried out with meticulous precision, the project has been recognised with the Highly Decorative Project of the Year award in the Premier Trophy Awards – a national competition promoting high standards of craftsmanship organised by the Painting and Decorating Association.

This October, Little Greene will be supporting Breast Cancer Haven throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month raising money for the charity for the sixth year.

Throughout the month, 15p from every tin of paint and roll of wallpaper sold will be donated to Breast Cancer Haven, a charity providing holistic treatments, advice and care for people whose lives have been affected by breast cancer. Last year our stockists and customers managed to raise and incredible £10,000 for the charity.

Paradise - Pink

To commemorate our long-standing support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we have launched a capsule collection of eight pink shades and a limited edition pink colourway of our ‘Paradise’ wallpaper. The ‘Pink’ collection provides a delicious choice of shades from soft, delicate tones to bolder more seductive hues.

Hannah Daws, Fundraising and Communications Director at Breast Cancer Haven said:

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM). It is a time when we encourage everyone to join us in raising money and awareness to support people affected by a diagnosis of breast cancer. We are honoured that Little Greene have once again chosen to support Breast Cancer Haven during BCAM 2016 through the sales of their beautiful range of paints and wall papers. All donations raised by Little Greene during October will go towards helping us to continue to provide our free one-to-one programme of care and support to those who need us, helping them to cope with the emotional impact of breast cancer and the physical side-effects of their medical treatment.”

To celebrate #WoolWeek. ‘The Campaign For Wool’ opened an innovative ‘Wool BnB’ in which all the contents were created using wool.

Located in Islington, guests were invited to browse the BnB and learn more about wool and how it can be used within the home.

We were delighted to supply paint for the project and provided a range of Little Greene shades, including 'Marine Blue', 'Yellow Pink' and 'Leather' to complement the bold schemes and artwork that adorned the property.
