Farben und Tapeten sind ein beliebtes Gestaltungsmittel, um Innenräumen einen individuellen Look zu geben. Doch was sind die Vorteile von Farbe gegenüber Tapete und umgekehrt? Und welche Nachteile gilt es eventuell zu beachten?

Farbe ist im Vergleich zu Tapete deutlich einfacher an- und gegebenenfalls auch wieder abzubringen. Entscheidet man sich nach kurzer Zeit für einen anderen Look, lässt sich eine farbige Wand ohne großen Arbeitsaufwand wieder überstreichen.

Da Little Greene Farben in verschiedenen Qualitäten angeboten werden (aktuell über 12 Varianten), lässt sich für jede Raumsituation das passende Finish wählen. So sind unsere Farben auch in strapazierten (Nass-) Räumen wie Bad oder Küche lange haltbar.

Und auch für den Außenbereich haben wir natürlich wetterfeste Qualitäten in unserem Sortiment.

Farbe kann großflächig im gesamten Raum aufgetragen werden oder aber auch als einzelner Akzente wirken, wenn beispielsweise nur eine Wand, Tür oder ein Möbelstück farbig gestrichen wird.

Little Greene Farben sind zudem besonders umweltfreundlich. Unsere wasserbasierten Farben erfüllen nicht nur, sondern übersteigen sogar bestimmte Umwelt-Richtlinien und unsere ölbasierten Farben werden aus rein pflanzlichen Stoffen hergestellt, ganz ohne gesundheitsschädliche Lösungsmittel. Damit eignen sie sich auch optimal zum Einsatz im Kinder- oder Schlafzimmer.

Schwierigkeiten bei der Farbwahl

Entscheidet man sich für Farbe, kann es eventuell Schwierigkeiten bereiten, den richtigen Farbton aus der Fülle an Angeboten auszuwählen.

Was passt zu meiner Raumsituation? Was muss ich bei der Farbwahl im Hinblick auf Raumgröße, Einrichtung etc. beachten? Welche Farbtöne lassen sich gegebenenfalls kombinieren?

Es ist wichtig, die Lichtverhältnisse (sowohl die natürlichen als auch die künstlichen) im Raum zu beachten. Wie variieren diese im Laufe eines Tages und was für einen Einfluss hat dies auf die Wirkung der Farben?

Alle unsere Farben gibt es in drei Schattierungen. Mit diesen lassen sich Lichtverhältnisse gestalten, beeinflussen bzw. ausgleichen. Außerdem können unsere Colour Scale Reihen bei der Auswahl der passenden Farbe hilfreich sein. Sie bieten verschieden Abstufungen bzw. Intensitäten eines Farbpigments, wodurch sie sich auch sehr harmonisch kombinieren lassen.

Ein Nachteil von Farbe gegenüber Tapete ist, dass bereits geöffnete Farbdosen ein gewisses Verfallsdatum haben. Werden sie jedoch korrekt wiederverschlossen und in kühler, trockener und frostfreier Umgebung aufbewahrt, können sie bis zu zwei Jahre wiederverwendet werden. Dies unterstreicht den Nachhaltigkeitsansatz von Little Greene.

Die Vorteile von Tapeten

Mit dem Einsatz von Tapeten lassen sich Räume gezielt mit einem individuellen Touch versehen. Florale Motive erzeugen eine natürliche Atmosphäre und folgen den aktuellen Trends.

Mit Damast-Tapeten lässt sich dagegen eine klassisch mondäne Umgebung schaffen.

Mit etwas Vorwissen lassen sich Tapeten gut ohne professionelle Hilfe anbringen. Vor allem non-woven Vliestapeten lassen sich schnell, sauber und an einem Stück an- und auch wieder abnehmen.

Tapeten lassen sich gut mit Wandfarbe kombinieren. Auch hier gilt: mit einer Statement-Tapete an nur einer Wand angebracht lassen sich faszinierende Highlights setzen, die mit einem passenden Farbton an den anderen Wänden wunderbar zur Geltung kommen.

Verwendet man Farbe und Tapeten-Muster in Kombination, kann man einen Raum also komplett umgestalten oder auch nur eine dezente Wirkung erzielen.

Tapeten werden mit verschiedenen Drucktechniken hergestellt. Je nachdem ob mattes, glänzendes oder metallisches Material verwendet wird, entsteht ein subtiles Spiel aus Licht, Textur und Muster im Design.

Nachteile von Tapeten

Konventionell hergestellte Tapeten können schwierig und zeitaufwendig beim An- oder Abbringen sein. Außerdem benötigen Tapeten trockene, gut belüftete Räume. In Verbindung mit Feuchtigkeit können sich Tapeten ablösen oder wellig werden. Zudem sind sie anfälliger für Schmutz und schwierig zu reinigen, es sei denn, es handelt sich um abwaschbares Material.

A totally matt, yet completely washable alternative to a traditional emulsion paint, perfect for busy homes, particularly on walls and ceilings. The finish has an extremely low gloss level of 5%, providing a beautifully flat, matt finish.

Intelligent Eggshell

Intelligent Eggshell is the perfect water-based finish for painting kitchen cabinets. Formulated to resist moisture, staining and general wear and tear, Intelligent Eggshell has a tough yet subtle finish and is perfect for woodwork and both kitchen and bathroom walls. It has a low-sheen level of 15% and is available in the full Little Greene colour palette.

Intelligent Gloss
For a high shine finish, Intelligent Gloss is a quick drying alternative to Oil Gloss. It is ideal for use on interior woodwork in rooms that require frequent cleaning. The gloss level is 85% and it is available in all Little Greene shades.

Oil-Based Paints
With a nine hundred year pedigree, oil-based paints have long been recognised as the classic finish for woodwork. By forming a deeper bond with the surface than is possible with a quick-drying paint, traditional oil-based recipes are renowned for their increased longevity, excellent flow and smooth finish.
All our oil-based paints have been reformulated using naturally occurring vegetable oils to replace solvent ingredients.

Flat Oil Eggshell
Flat Oil Eggshell is a low-odour, modern oil-based paint which resists staining and general wear and tear making it perfect for woodwork and primed metals. It has a gloss level of 15-20% and is surface dry in just 4 hours. Designed specifically for interior use, the formula has been developed to give superior, glide-on application characteristics with extended workability and open time, making brushing out a real pleasure, even for the least confident of painters.
The formulation provides a smooth, low-sheen finish, suitable for woodwork including kitchen cabinets. The finish is extremely durable, making it the perfect choice for a busy kitchen space.

Floor Paint
For wooden or concrete floors, our Floor Paint (also oil-based) is one of the hardest wearing paints available for domestic use and, like all our finishes, is available in the full spectrum of Little Greene colours.

Jahrhundert gegenüber dem Great Ormond Street Children‘s Hospital entnommen hat. Dieses Design wurde dann im späten 19. Jahrhundert maschinell auf Zellulosepapier gedruckt.

Ein Oberflächendesign mit exotischen Lory-Vögeln und orientalischen Blüten, das von einem charismatischen Werk des 20. Jahrhunderts der Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester inspiriert wurde. Das exotische Thema und die fast symmetrische Wiederholung sind typisch für die Designs der 1930er Jahre. Es bildet die Sehnsucht nach Reisen in ferne Länder und das Zurschaustellen des eigenen Reichtums gegenüber Besuchern zuhause ab. Obwohl sie für den heutigen Gebrauch neu eingefärbt sind, zeugen die ausgewählten Farbtöne von der Verwendung heller Farben, die in den 1930er Jahren üblich waren, und der Lory könnte allein aus diesen Gründen als Motiv gewählt worden sein!

Paradise – Nightshade

Die Tapete Paradise (1940) feiert einen wirklich reichen Stilmix. Das Dokument aus dem Besitz des English Heritage, aus dem dieses Papier stammt, ist ein Stück aus dem 20. Jahrhundert. Aber das Thema - exotische Flora und die bekannten orientalischen Ho-ho-Vögel - ist klassische alte Chinoiserie, während die Farbgebung im Original sehr stark im Stil französischer Tapeten aus dem 19. Jahrhundert gehalten ist. Dieses Design konserviert den übergroßen Rapport des Originals und wurde in sechs atemberaubenden Farbstellungen reproduziert.

Darwin

Darwin

Darwin (1760) ist eine der wichtigsten Akquisitionen der Whitworth Art Gallery. Mit einer Wendung in der Geschichte wurde dieses beispielhafte englische Stück in einem Haus in Aix-en-Provence, Frankreich, unversehrt gefunden. Die exotische Szene ahmt ein handgemaltes chinesisches Papier aus dem 18. Jahrhundert genau nach, aber die Steuermarke, der immer noch auf der Rückseite des Originalpapiers sichtbar ist, identifiziert klar seinen englischen Ursprung. Die in der „Serein“-Farbgebung interpretierten Farben sind sehr originalgetreu - ein überraschend (und wunderbar) gut erhaltenes Archivdokument.

Diese Tapete im farbenprächtigen Pfauenfederdesign wurde im Dachgeschoss von 18 Carlton House Terrace gefunden, einem eleganten Wohngebäude mit langgezogener Stuckfassade und Blick auf The Mall in London. Das Original wurde maschinell in Grün auf gelbem Untergrund gedruckt. Das zu seiner Nachstellung eingesetzte Flachdruckverfahren spiegelt die Anmutung des Originals präzise wider, während ein wohlüberlegter Farbspritzer in der Feder einen Ansatz zur Verankerung eines zeitgenössischen Schemas bietet.

Broke House – Cinder

Das von English Heritage im Brooke House in Hackney gefundene Dokument, aus dem dieses Muster gezeichnet wurde, ist auf die 1920er Jahre datiert, vor allem wegen der Art und Weise, in der es gedruckt wurde: eine Tiefdruck-Technik, die erst nach der Jahrhundertwende kommerziell nutzbar wurde. Tatsächlich ist das Design aber wahrscheinlich von einem viel früheren Papier kopiert worden und die fünf Farbtöne wurden mit der eher malerischen, strukturellen Oberflächenaufdruck-Technik hergestellt, die typisch für die ältere Originaltapete ist.

Brodsworth - Empress

Die Tapete Brodsworth aus unserer aktuellen Kollektion London Wallpapers V: ein lebhaftes, fesselndes Design mit auffälligen Vögeln und zarten Blumenmotiven. Das leicht erhöhte Muster mit reich vergoldeten Details sollte vom Aussehen her ursprünglich gestempeltes Leder imitieren. Die auf französischen Stoffen und Dekors aus dem frühen 18. Jahrhundert basierende Tapete mit Feldern, Schnörkeln und Schraffuren wurde in Brodsworth Hall in Süd-Yorkshire gefunden. Dieses elegante viktorianische Herrenhaus wurde zwischen 1861 und 1863 erbaut. Es war bis 1990 in Privatbesitz und diente als Wohnhaus. Danach wurde es von English Heritage übernommen und restauriert. Die Tapete war bei der Familie eindeutig beliebt; sie wurde, was ungewöhnlich war, in jeweils umgekehrter Farbkombination sowohl in der Bibliothek als auch im Frühstückszimmer verwendet und ist dort noch heute zu besichtigen.

Crowe Hall Lane – Gilt

Eine großformatige Tapete aus dem späten 19. Jahrhundert mit einem kräftigen Muster aus exotischen Vögeln und Blumen. Das Papier war in einem geschwungenen Treppenhaus in Crowe Hall, einem Herrenhaus von Suffolk, verwendet worden, in dem die vertikale Beschaffenheit des nachlaufenden Musters die Höhe des Raums betonte. Es ist wahrscheinlich um die Jahrhundertwende aufgehängt worden und wurde durch umfangreiche Konservierungsarbeiten am Haus viel später geborgen. Dieses Design ist ein bestehender und viel beachteter Bestandteil des Little Greene-Portfolios. Es ist in drei neuen sowie in vier bestehenden Farben erhältlich.

Die Tapete „Vine“ (1932) stammt aus dem Archiv der Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester und ist eine unverkennbare Anspielung auf William Morris, dem Vater der Arts & Crafts-Bewegung des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts. Eine authentische Methode des Oberflächendrucks wurde verwendet, um diese zeitgenössische Version zu reproduzieren, bei der das Blau dem Original in seiner Farbgebung sehr nahe kommt - trotz des schlechten Zustands der Hintergrundfarbe des überlieferten Fragments.

The colour grey has been at the root of historical decoration for centuries and, even now, remains a timeless staple. It is a signature shade for the most sophisticated interior design, working equally effectively in a classic or contemporary setting. Records of the earliest decorative paint samples show colours based only on carbon black (soot) and iron oxide pigments. These subtle grey tones can be seen on the walls of fine stately homes, from drawing rooms to servants’ quarters, in townhouses and important industrial sites across Europe. Tom's Oil Eggshell ist der bevorzugte Lack eines unserer Senior-Chemiker. Dieser opake Holzlack hat einen exzellent homogenen Verlauf und verleiht Holz und Metall ein wunderbar seidenmattes Finish. Das strapazierfähige, flexible Finish ist wetterfest und abwaschbar und in allen Farben erhältlich.

Intelligent Gloss Paint

Intelligent Gloss Paint auf Wasserbasis ist eine robuste, voll abwaschbare Hochglanzfarbe. Eine umweltfreundliche und strapazierfähige Alternative zum Hochglanz-Öllack für innen und außen. Intelligent Gloss Paint ist auf fast allen Oberflächen anwendbar, u.a. Wände, Holz und grundiertes Metall, wie z.B. Heizkörper und Rohre. Es hat einen sehr hohen Glanzgrad von 85% und umfasst ca. 14 qm pro Liter. In allen Farben erhältlich.

Masonry Paint

Masonry Paint ist ein höchst effektiver, 100%iger Acrylanstrich in matter Qualität, der am Besten für den Anstrich von Außenwänden geeignet ist. Er ist umweltfreundlich, da er auf Wasser basiert und trocknet schnell zu einer glatten Oberfläche. Durch den enthaltenen Schimmel- und Algenschutz ist er vollständig wetterfest und durch einen Glanzgrad von 5% sehr matt.

Bei Traditional Oil Gloss Paint handelt es sich um eine geruchsarme, traditionelle Farbe auf Ölbasis in sehr langlebigem, klassischem Hochglanz (Glanzgrad - 85%). Dieser aus Löschkalk hergestellte, traditionelle, matte Schutzanstrich für Wandflächen im Innen- und Außenbereich ist gebrauchsfertig und muss vor dem Auftragen nur verdünnt werden. Mit einem Glanzgrad von 3% ist er sehr matt und für Außenanstriche auf Kalk, Mörtel, Lehm und Gips geeignet. Er reicht für ca. 6 qm pro Liter und ist in 203 Pastelltönen erhältlich.

Our Colour Specialist, Simon Hutchinson has a vast knowledge of producing and mixing colours for projects that require a more tailored approach. Using spectrophotometry and a detailed understanding of pigments, he formulates both bespoke colours and colour matches for historic shades.

Here, Simon shares his advice on painting a period property and how to create a beautiful home whilst retaining its history.

What should people consider when embarking on a decorating project in a period property?

One of the most important things when you are starting a project is to make sure you are using the right product. There can often be many pitfalls with ‘older’ houses, especially when it comes to the use of lime in plaster and renders and how to paint over them. It’s always best to get advice before you start the project just to double check.

Also, check if your house is listed or in a conservation area before you begin any exterior paint work. There can often be limitations on the colour and finish you can use so it is good to check this beforehand.

Are there any common mistakes that people make when decorating a period property?

It is quite common to see colours being used on the exterior of a property that aren’t quite in keeping with the age of the house. For example, brilliant white is often used on exterior joinery but really this colour wasn’t available until the 1960s. A softer, more complementary colour to use would be Little Greene’s ‘Lead White.’ This colour was initially matched to lead carbonate which was the primary white pigment used before the turn of the 20th century, it is warmer and softer than a brilliant white so blends really well with traditional stones and bricks.

Black is a colour that is often used on exterior railings and front doors. Prior to the 20th century this colour wouldn’t actually have been used on exterior metalwork. If you have a Georgian property, some different options would be ‘Dark Lead Colour’ and for Victorian buildings, ‘Invisible Green’ or ‘Deep Brunswick Green’ are perfect.

What are some of the key interior design trends from different periods?

A Georgian trend which is still perfect for the contemporary home was the use of ‘common colours’ in the main parts of a house and the use of more expensive colours in the best rooms. For example, you could use a stone colour such as ‘Stone Mid Cool’ in the hallway and corridors with the introductions of ‘Pea Green’ or ‘Light Peachblossom’ in a living room, it certainly gives a nod to Georgian interiors.

During the late Georgian and Regency period, the panelling below a dado rail would often be painted in a natural stone colour such as ‘Stone Pale Cool’ with a contrasting colour like ‘Blue Verditer’ or ‘Yellow Pink’ on the walls above which would create a classic, period feel to a home of that age.

By the Victorian period, interiors had taken on a much more multi influential look due to the availability of exotic artefacts and the mass production of wallpapers. It is certainly an era that we can look to for inspiration and there are some wonderful, rich colours from this period such as ‘Ashes of Roses’ and ‘Brunswick Green’ that give a beautiful eclectic feel.

How important is it to use colours that are in keeping with a building?

One thing to remember when painting a period property is that it is your home and not a museum. It is really important to choose colours that you are naturally drawn to and that you feel comfortable living with every day.
You can really complement a period property by just being sympathetic to the period and architecture. It may be something quite simple like limiting your palette to only a handful of colours or keeping your woodwork in the same colour throughout the house that really draws attention to the natural features within your home.

How do you recreate historic shades?

When matching and recreating historic shades for projects, I need to make sure that the modern colour has the same feeling and response to different lights. With an understanding of the pigments used at the time, these can be paralleled with our modern pigments and I can recreate and match these shades perfectly.

Intelligent Eggshell ist noch strapazierfähiger und wurde kreiert, um Feuchtigkeit, Flecken und allgemeiner Abnutzung standzuhalten. Diese Qualität weist einen eleganten Glanzgrad von 15 % auf und ist eine wunderbare, wasserbasierte, abwaschbare Option für Holz-, Küchen- und Badezimmerwände.

Intelligent Exterior Eggshell
Intelligent Exterior Eggshell bietet die gleiche zartglänzende Oberfläche (15 %) als Finish für den Aussenbereich. Sie hält auf frischem und unbehandeltem Holz auch ohne Grundierung (also ohne Primer oder Unterlack) und bietet eine hervorragende Durchdringung, was sie zur besten Wahl für Holzarbeiten im Aussenbereich macht. Sie trocknet schnell und ist dennoch extrem langlebig. Sie ist wetterbeständig und enthält einen Schimmel- und Algenschutz. Somit eignet sie sich dazu, Holz- und Metallkonstruktionen im Aussenbereich Farbe zu verleihen.

Intelligent Gloss
Intelligent Gloss ist robust und vollständig abwaschbar und weist einen hohen Glanzgrad auf (85 %). Diese Qualität ist eine rasch trocknende, wasserbasierte Alternative zu ölbasierten Hochglanzfarben und kann sowohl im Innen- als auch im Aussenbereich verwendet werden. Sie eignet sich ideal für Holzarbeiten, grundiertes Metall und Gipswände, wenn ein smartes, hochglänzendes Finish erwünscht ist.

Our range of ‘Intelligent’ paints are smart, elegant finishes that have been formulated for today’s busy homes.
